National Donut Day

National Donut Day 2015 is Friday, June 6th!

During World War I, approximately 250 Salvation Army volunteers assisted American soldiers in France, where rations were slim and the volunteers gave out coffee and donuts as a way to promote cheer and serve as a reminder of home. National Donut Day, held every year on the first Friday in June, was established by The Salvation Army in 1938 in Chicago to honor the “Donut Lassies” who served the treats (along with writing supplies, stamps, clothes-mending and home-cooked meals) and to help raise funds during the Great Depression.

The Salvation Army continues to provide meals and services to daily to those who visit Salvation Army programs. On National Donut Day, enjoy a free donut at one of the local companies below— and if you can, let the day inspire you to donate time or money to help the Salvation Army carry on their work.

Krispy Kreme is offering a free doughnut of your choice: one per customer, while supplies last, not valid at drive-thru. Our local Krispy Kreme is at 114 N DuPont Highway (Rt 13) across from the Farmer’s Market, but if you’re in Philly or Jersey you can stop in at one of those stores to score your freebie.

Dunkin’ Donuts will give you one free donut when you buy a beverage this Friday.

Cumberland Farms customers score a free doughnut Friday with a purchase of coffee (hot or iced) or a Chill Zone beverage from 5 – 10am.

Participating Jiffy Lube locations in Philadelphia are offering free tire air pressure checks so you don’t wind up blowing a tire and using your “donut.” With the pressure check, you also get a complimentary donut. While I found this mentioned in a number of places, I couldn’t track down a list of participating locations… so this is really only for those who suspect they need their tires checked anyway.
