blue hen lanes

blue hen lanesA few weeks back we got an invite to a kids’ party at Brunswick Blue Hen Lanes in the Newark Shopping Center (off Main Street) via their email newsletter.

It was great fun! The kids got to bowl for two hours, they had a wheel to spin for prizes along with prizes for answers to trivia questions. Jake won a free game for being the “next kid to bowl a strike or spare.” They served pizza and ice cream, and it was a awesome taste of what it’s like to hold a birthday party there.

This summer, kids (under 18) can bowl a game FOR FREE every day with the Student Ball Pass at Brunswick Bowling Centers. You just need to sign up and coupons will auto-magically arrive in your inbox every week through the end of August.

AND, everybody gets a free game July 1st- July 4th as part of the Happy Birthday America celebration. No coupon needed.

AND, Monday- Friday from 9am- 3pm, get 2 hours unlimited bowling, soft drink, individual pizza for $9.99.

Now, you do need to pay for shoe rental on all these deals, but it’s still an inexpensive option for summer family fun.

Little kids can get in on the action too! Obviously, bumper lanes are available, but I also saw some sort of contraption that parents were using that allows even the smallest bowlers to play. Basically it’s a metal ramp that you pull up to the line; you place the ball on top and your wee one can push it down the ramp. Much better for launch momentum.

Confession:

I really like to bowl. When I was kid we bowled all the time on Sunday mornings (you used to be able to rent a lane for 3 hours for a flat fee) and when I was in college my friends and I did midnight bowling just about every weekend.

I worry that bowling alleys are going to go the way of the roller rink— functionally extinct— so this is me earnestly urging you to frequent your local bowling alleys (Blue Hen Lanes in particular because they were so nice). It’s good clean unplugged fun, a bit of exercise, a sport you don’t have to be an athlete to be good at, and AIR CONDITIONED.
