2017 Lecture Series: “The Captain and The Keelson”

What’s all this talk about a “keelson?” What is a keelson, anyway? Why did Kalmar Nyckel need a new one for her 20th Anniversary? Come hear the inside story behind the extraordinary 10-month maintenance project that got our Tall Ship of Delaware sailing again. Get the “down and dirty” from Port Captain Sharon Dounce herself – everything from the lead ballast to the plumbing (yes, those port-a-potties were essential!), the scarf joints to the engine overhaul, the missing masts to the blue-barreled stability test. Wooden sailing vessels turn out to need a lot of work, and Captain Sharon will give you a better understanding of what it takes to stay ship-shape. A special 20th Anniversary Celebration cake will follow the lecture!
This exciting lecture is FREE, but tickets are required. The event begins with a cash-bar cocktail hour at 5 pm, and lecture at 6 pm.
