The Nature of 1800s British Architectural Design

FreeIn conjunction with Rockwood’s innovative art installation, The Nature of Gothic, discover the British design sources that influenced the picturesque appearance of Rockwood and many notable houses from the 1800s. Each 45-minute lecture by the curator of The Nature of Gothic exhibition, Heather Moqtaderi, will be followed by low-key opportunities to discuss important design publications from the period and see how they relate to The Nature of Gothic art installations.
October 6 – The Gothic Revival style in England and the United States, a style that reimagines Medieval church architecture for modern 19th century builders like Joseph Shipley at Rockwood.
October 13 – The Aesthetic Movement, an architectural style associated with the philosophy of “Art for Art’s Sake.” With roots in early 19th century English design reform, the Aesthetic Movement fostered European and American appreciation for ornament sourced from around the globe.
October 20 – With roots in mid-19th century England, the Arts and Crafts Movement was influential throughout Europe and the United States well into the 20th century.
