I’ve argued that the best toys are the simple ones that come without instructions, highly transportable, inexpensive, fun for all ages.
My official list included things like Frisbees and a deck of cards, but I’m just now realizing I forgot the yo-yo. Yo-yos are great because they take little finesse to be able to use, but the possibilities are endless. Some people are freaking AMAZING at the yo-yo. And anyone can create new tricks.
I had a friend once open a concert just doing yo-yo tricks with a little comedic timing. It was groan-worthy and mesmerizing at the same time.
How do you improve on a classic like the yo-yo? I’ll tell you how.
You flatten it out a bit, put lights on either end, and play it horizontally.
They’re called Fyrflyz, and you can create an endless array of shapes with light when you play with them.
They don’t photograph well in low-light, though. The patterns all kind of blend into each other and make circles.
I think I probably enjoy watching the kids play with these things as much as (or more than) they enjoy playing with them! They were frustrated at first, unable to create much beyond a circle or an oval, but the Fyrflyz sit here and there around the house and the kids pick them up when they’re not doing anything.
And as time goes on, they’re discovering new patterns and shapes.
(I could say something about how they’re probably accidentally absorbing information about physics, geometry and three-dimensional shapes… but I won’t. Instead, I’ll mention how much I loved my Spirograph as a kid. This toy reminds me of that quite a bit.)
Here’s a video the boys made of their Fyrflyz fun.
Fyrflyz are available for purchase at Toys R Us stores and other toy stores/aisles.
But lucky you: I’ve got one to give away!
You can have two chances to win:
1) MANDATORY:
Leave me a comment below about your favorite childhood toy.
2) IN ADDITION YOU CAN:

1. I think your family is basically The Coolest.
2. My fav childhood toy is kinda lame: baby dolls. I was really into dolls and playing house and pretending to be a Mommy. My super life-like baby doll was named Pascal. I definitely dug my roller skates when I finally mastered them, though.
3. As I am now required by my employer to be on Twitter, I will follow ya’ll.
Thanks for the awesome video. I will watch it again!

My favorite toy from my childhood was my heart-to-heart teddy bear. When you press up against the “heart” it would make a beating sound. Very soothing. I gave it to my daughter recently, and I hope she finds as much comfort from it as I did.
