What is Whale of a Sale?
Founded in 1980, the Junior League of Wilmington’s Whale of a Sale is one of the League’s largest and most profitable fundraisers. Throughout the year, League members collect donations of new and gently used clothes, toys, books, furniture, housewares, electronics and more to sell at discount prices at the sale.
In addition to gently used items, the Whale of a Sale contains sections offering new merchandise, furniture and antiques. This popular event draws many crowds who often wait in line overnight to be the first to shop the Whale of a Sale.
This event is open to the public and attracts thousands of shoppers throughout the tri-state region. Whale of a Sale has a large number of veterans including many shoppers who have been attending for 20+ years. Whale shoppers include business owners stocking up on antiques and collectibles, fashion divas in leotards to make trying on clothes a snap, and savvy shoppers who recognize a good value.
Where and when is Whale of a Sale held?
The 34th Whale of a Sale will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2016 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 148 Sunset Blvd, New Castle DE 19720.
What do the proceeds from this fundraiser benefit?
Proceeds from Whale of a Sale support the Junior League of Wilmington’s mission of improving the lives of girls age 12-18 in Greater Wilmington. Some of our projects include making improvements to facilities at the Delaware Adolescent Program which affords pregnant teenagers a means by which to continue their education and receive pre-natal care; conducting life skill workshops at Bayard House, a residential program serving homeless or transitional pregnant minors; and a mentoring program for granddaughters of the families served by the Wilmington Senior Center. We also assisted with the passage of Erin’s Law in Delaware. In June 2016, The First State became the 28th state to pass Erin’s Law which requires that all public schools in each state implement a prevention-oriented child sexual abuse program.
In addition, many venues do not project an end time for their events. In those cases, we selected our best guess, but the duration of your event may vary.
